Trying to Kill My Family

First, before I proceed, I need to apologize to my family and to any of my friends who have eaten at our house. When I was cleaning, organizing, and purging my food pantry and cabinets, I was amazed and appalled at what I found lurking in the deep spaces of these areas. Here are some interesting finds…

Cherries

OK, who needs 4 bottles of Maraschino Cherries? We don’t even eat them, and we have 4 bottles of the cherries. And talk about over abundance…

Cinnamon

I have 5 unopened bottles of cinnamon. Not picture are 2 opened bottles. We *really* like cinnamon toast but not enough to go through this much cinnamon!

Cookie lids oatmeal

I also found lots of trash like these 2 cookie container lids and this box oatmeal with only one package left. I hate almost empty boxes…

spaghetti jar spaghetti jar opened

Hiding on one shelf was this blue spaghetti jar. There was an inch thick dust on it and spaghetti inside. I wonder how old that pasta is???

Mystery bag
Mystery bag contents

This bag was hiding in another cabinet. I was suspicious… what the heck is this??? I poured it out on a plate… it looked like salt. I think?

lollipops

And then there were these… Are there any flavors you just don’t like? Apparently, my kids won’t touch Cream Soda, Butterscotch, Coconut, and Chocolate Dum Dums.

What scared me, though, was the amount of expired foods in my cabinets.

Expired

Have I been cooking with food that is so out of date? We must be pretty resilient since we haven’t keeled over yet! Some of the food was OLD. I’m not talking only a year old. I mean like ancient old.

Oldest expired

The stuff on the left above is from 2002! 2002?? We were not even married yet. The stuff on the right is from 2004. We moved to MI in 2004. Does mean we hauled halfway across the country expired food items?? *gag*

I filled up 2 trash bags of… well, trash! I have a box of food items to donate as well.

Donated

So what have you found interesting or gross while cleaning out your food cabinets?

  1. mine was the medicine closet. It’s a few shelves in the linen closet in the hallway. I had stuff that expires in like, oh say 1990!! It was disgusting. I pitched and sorted and got it down to one organized shelf where you can actually find what you’re looking for. I’m surprised I didn’t poison my family befoe this purging though.

  3. We cleaned out the lazy Susan cubbard over the weekend and my husband found something from 1995.

To tell the truth, I knew it was there. I like freaking him out like that. I’d been waiting for him to find it and it was exhilarating when he did.

    Wee hee!

  4. 1990! I hate to see what is in my medicine cabinet!! I’m so bad about purging. (No more, though! ;) )

Go for it, Jeff!! If you’d like to join the fun, we’ll actually be the tackling home office next month. I’m actually dreading that as I have TONS of paper to go through, file, and purge. My desk area is a nationally declared disaster zone. (Well, my whole house is, but I won’t focus on that. LOL) :D

  9. That “salt” looks like a component for dyeing that wrap you had. Did you locate or dispose of the chemicals after you sold the wrap and dyes?

Its probably too late but the cinnamon could have been used to make cinnamon ornaments ie. smell goods for everywhere.

  10. ;) We were lucky. We clean out our fridge every two weeks and check expiration labels, sniff containers, etc. We just cleaned our pantry about a month ago, so it was nothing to clean it. We have a big bag of Tupperware that belongs to Mom (can you say leftovers?) that we need to return to her, though.
