Heavenly Roots

moving boxesAfter reading my friend Kelli’s post about having a restless spirit and wanting to travel, it got me to thinking about where I’ve been and where I am now. I was an Air Force brat. And that seemed to be a fortelling of my life as an adult.

From the time I was born to now I have lived in these places (in this order as a matter of fact):

-> Charleston, South Carolina

-> Warner Robins, Georgia

-> Fort Worth, Texas

-> Fort Walton Beach, Florida

-> Crestview, Florida (I was in 4th grade and graduated high school here. It would be the longest I ever lived anywhere.)

-> Fort Walton Beach, Florida (moved 3 times in 3 years within this city)

-> Milton, Florida

-> Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas (Basic Training)

-> Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, Mississippi (Technical Training)

-> Aviano Air Base, Aviano, Italy (moved 3 times in 2 years within this city)

-> Kelly Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas (moved 5 times in 3 years within this city)

-> Hickam Air Force Base, Honolulu, Hawaii (moved 3 times in 3 years within this city)

-> Milton, Florida

-> San Antonio, Texas (moved 5 times in 4 years within this city)

I got married and within 2 weeks we received a notice from hubby’s company: “Relocate or become unemployed.” What?! So you probably can guess what we did… yep! We moved! This Southern country family had to get used to snow and freezing temperatures?! Brrrr….

-> Rochester Hills, Michigan (moved 3 times in 2 years within this city)

-> Auburn Hills, Michigan

No wonder I want to put roots down. I have moved 32 times within my 38 years of existence. I’m not sure how I ended up with this nomad kind of life. I do not regret the military life that first led me to beautiful northern Italy and then to sunny tropical Hawaii.

But for as long as I can remember, I wanted a family, a house to call my own, and land. We still don’t own a home, and we are quite certain that Michigan is not our permanent home. But this constant moving makes it hard to make deep friendships (after all, why put all that effort only to lose it when you move again). Always renting makes it hard to put our personality into our home. I feel it is hardest on the kids: I don’t think my oldest feels like she belongs up here at all.

But wherever we go, we do our best to remember that where we live on earth will always be temporary for we are “no more than foreigners and nomads here on earth” (Heb 11:13). We are simply traveling to our heavenly home. Now how can any home on earth compare to a place prepared especially for us by God (John 13:2)? Now that will be a place I can put roots down.

  2. Wow! That’s a lot of moving!

    My husband moved around a lot as a child and at one point lived with his family in an old school bus (they were very poor) and parked in a different place every night. Of course, the family doesn’t talk about that time very much but I think it is something they should be proud of — they stayed together through a very hard time.

    Virginia was my home base until I turned 21 and then I began plotting my move west, my manifest destiny. It was strange — I felt compelled to live in Washington state. Seriously. As it turned out, there was a reason I felt that way — that’s where I met my husband!

    A year after we got married, we packed up to move to Georgia. And here we are until our next move (most likely to Kentucky).

    I like the way you look at your adventures. You would certainly have made an excellent pioneer woman!

    Blessings!
